This is the Review of Bramble: The Mountain King, WITH SPOILERS!!! In case you haven’t played the game yet, we would recommend you to chack out out Spoiler-Free Review
Every now and then, there is an indie horror game that catches my attention with a trailer or small gameplay video, the atmosphere, the gameplay or the visuals and sometimes all of them impress me enough to try it. Bramble: The Mountain King was actually recommended by Chris, one of the members of the blog, and it is one of the games that had the things that needed for me to play it.
A few things about Bramble: The Mountain King
Even though I had an initial positive view for the game, it doesn’t give the full picture about the game. A few things about the game before I start with the review, the description of the game on its steam store page says “Bramble: The Mountain King is a grim adventure set in a world inspired by dark, Nordic fables. Explore the beautiful yet dangerous and twisted land of Bramble in your endeavor to rescue your sister. Traverse a wondrous landscape and survive deadly encounters with Bramble’s many hideous creatures”. The game being inspired by nordic fables, definitely attracts people who like nordic fables, and people like me who are not familiar with them, but really interested to learn about them.

The characters
In the game, you play as Olle, a young boy who wants to rescue his sister Lillermor from a dreaded troll. He travels through the forest, with beautiful but also dark and grim areas. Encountering friendly creatures like gnomes and Frog Prince who help him find his sister and save him from dangerous situations. Encountering Monsters that try to harm him in their own way. Behind every character in the game there is a story or rather a fable, that you can read in a small book (definitely look out for them) and learn about the story. The developers did a great job of handling that part making it easy for the player to understand the story. Providing you enough information to continue and keep you wanting to learn more. And answer questions that come up throughout the game.

One thing I loved about the game
The best thing about the game that helps tell the story is the narration. It can be disabled for those who might not like it, but for those who do like me, is a great and unique way to tell the story especially when you are traversing to the next area and there aren’t a lot of things happening on screen. This is something that other studios, indie or big, can take inspiration from and come out with something new and innovative regarding the way they tell a story in game.
About the story
Since this is the review with spoilers, I will go through the story in more detail and note the parts that impressed me and the ones that could be improved.
The game begins with Olle the protagonist waking up from a nightmare. Trying to find his sister’s confort, she is not in her bed and Olle sees that she left outside from the room’s window. On his way to find his sister he finds a mysterious light that he can grab so he takes it. Eventually he finds his sister and they start playing with the light, almost losing it in the process. After they are done playing they continue walking deeper in the forest finding new friends in the process. Unfortunately Lillemor gets captured by a big troll, marking the beginning of Olle’s mission to save her.

Chapters and Bosses
The game has in total 17 chapters, with 6 bosses. Each with their own tale, that Olle faces throughout his adventure. Each boss’ story is through books that you will find in certain levels. With beautiful artwork bringing the story to life and achieving the right atmosphere.
The bosses that impressed me the most are Kärrhäxan. Being limited movement and barely seeing what is happening beyond Olle because of the dark. And the shocking story that unfolds not only in the book you find, but also in front of you! Seeing the aftermath of everything that happened.
Also Skogsrå, as is a character that plays an important role for the forest and killing her has severe consequences.
A boss that had a nice story behind, but also a bit confusing as to how to beat, is Näcken. She throws at you a strong sound wave that you have to avoid by covering, can be a bit confusing regarding where to hide and if you are well hidden. The final boss, the mountain king, is when you get to learn what happened to him. What the bramble is and how it took over the area. The story ends in this game and doesn’t seem to leave anything for a sequel to cover. Except if the developers have any plans about a potential one.
This was Bramble: the Mountain King
In conclusion, Bramble is delivering a great, unique experience, with a story that I will remember for a long time and the fables that are told through the game where otherwise me and many people could miss out, especially fans of this genre of games. It also shows that there are plenty of great stories that can be told and many people can enjoy.
Thank you for reading.
