The Flash: Full Lengthened Review

The Flash: Full Lengthened Review

This is a Spoiler Review so if you haven’t watched the Flash movie yet, I suggest you to read our Spoiler Free Review

So, you have seen the Flash too… I know how you feel…

This Movie is NOT for everyone!

You have to have seen DC’s previous movies to understand it. Not only that, but I struggled to understand where the promise of this movie was shown. What do I mean?

We know that DCU is getting a fresh reboot. With James Gunn as the co-CEO of this project. In his project presentation some months ago he said that “The Flash” movie and the Flashpoint will be the reason for the end of the previous universe (The Snyder-Verse) and it will begin the next one.

A quote that apparently was misleading, considering the fact that there was no concept of such a thing. Since the movie finished its script before James Gunn took charge. If you are going to see the movie solely for the DCU’s reboot you will leave thoroughly disappointed.

Is it a good movie though?

Well, that depends. Are you a fan of DC and are you familiar with its concept and storyline? Then yes, this movie is a solid 8/10! Great cameos, with a nostalgic touch, such as the return of Michael Keaton as the Batman. We got to see new characters such as Supergirl. And we witnessed a solid script with an important and serious morale.

Now things might be different for those who are not familiar with DC and their universe.

Of course if you haven’t seen the Man of Steel this movie will be a little weird for you. That being said, in order to fully understand the concept of the movie you have to be kinda familiar with the Flashpoint and the importance of it.

Even though it does in my opinion a great job explaining time travel and its effects. Bif plus for it is a complicated event.

The movie is not all good though, its poor and big use of CGI could get you to dislike it. Fully understandable, since the CGI was a little off in some scenes. Is this a sole reason to dislike the movie though? No, you can easily ignore the CGI since this movie is about storytelling and not about the effects and action.

Even though it has a lot of action. It is a superhero movie after all. We witness things as a speedster experiences the time and the fights.

Supergirl

I really liked the way the movie introduced her. She is different from Clark, Superman. She does not hold back her fists and we see a totally different superhero. I enjoyed Sasha’s Calle acting and I would like to see her returning in the upcoming movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Overall opinion

Overall when the movie ended I didn’t know how to feel. That was because I expected to see the end of a Universe and somehow a bridge to connect the next DC Universe project. But that was not the case and I got confused. That is the reason I found the movie kinda pointless. Since there were no significant events for the process of the DCU, which on one hand made sense in a way. The Snyder-Verse has ended anyways. After giving it a thought I have to say it was a good overall movie. I would give it a 7.5/10. It was a good character development and introduction of the Flash and a great explanation of the DC’s concept of the ‘multiverse’ with the SpeedForce.

Although I was hoping for a Reverse Flash appearance, or even a cameo…

OPINION OF A MARVEL FAN

Spyros is a supporter of Marvel and he is not familiar with DC’s Universe and concept. We watched the movie together and he shared his opinion about it.

The Movie was good with some flaws however, but good nonetheless. A 7/10 for me.

Acting, cinematography and cameos

The Flash has superb acting in my opinion. Props to Ezra Miller who did a really good job. Playing the same character twice in the same scene is a difficult task, but he delivered a superb performance. You could feel the emotions and the pain of his character. As much as what Barry Allen has been through and his effort trying to fix his mistake.

The Cinematography impressed me. Making a respectable effort giving the movie a comic look. Although I agree that the CGI was a little too much and in some cases, low quality. But I do not give it much thought since the effects were not the main goal in the movie’s plot.

I enjoyed the cameos and were surprised about them. Especially after knowing the background of each character! George Clooney in the end was a comic relief ending an overall emotionally heavy movie. Not to mention the appearance of Nicholas Cage as Superman, in the scene with the Worlds colliding with each other. Nicholas Cage was supposed to feature in a movie as Superman in a project that was canceled! After learning about this it really earned my respect to DC who features canceled projects as Universes that we never got to witness.

Negatives

There were things I was unable to understand. I had to ask Chris besides me what was happening and the meaning of most of the things throughout the movie. If you are not familiar with the Flash or well knowledgeable on the concept of the Flashpoint or the Speedforce, it becomes difficult to follow the movie.

It left me with plenty of plot hole questions. Why does he lose his powers when Barry of that timeline was gaining them? How does the coexistence of the two Barry Allen not create a timeline paradox? Overall it appeals to a limited audience, and becomes difficult to understand if you haven’t read the comics, or seen the TV show.

From what I learned from Chris, it had an anticlimactic ending. We didn’t get to see the end of the DCU and the beginning of the universe as James Gunn had promised. Creating more questions than answers, that will probably never be answered. I really wonder if they will explain at all the creation of the new universe…

ZACH Opinion

Zach's rating of the Flash

The Flash movie adapts the Flashpoint story of the comic generally very well, with some welcome changes but also leaves the audiences with unanswered questions. Although there are few weird moments especially regarding the visual effects, when the main plot of the movie begins. Barry’s interaction with his alternate self is weird at the beginning at first, with some good and some not so good jokes, but after about an hour in the movie is where the dynamic really shines and the performance helps make a flawed character interesting. The brief appearance of Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman has the importance of establishing the state of the Justice League before Barry attempts to go back in time and save his mother.

The introduction of Michael Keaton’s Batman is a true representation of the character from the original movie, picking after the of the original showing an older version of the character who has retired. The explanation of how time travel works and what are the consequences of the changes that Barry makes in order to save his mother, demonstrating visually with a plate of spaghetti may not be the best way, but it helps a lot since the concept can be confusing and too complicated. Also, before Barry tries to fix the timeline, he and Bruce must defeat General Zod, and the only person or rather alien that can fight him is Superman. Since Barry changed things, Superman’s pod didn’t land in the same place as it did before, so the first step is to find where Superman is.

Supergirl and the timetravel paradox

After finding the location and getting there they find another surprise, instead of Kal-El they find his cousin Kara Zor-El. Even though Supergirl doesn’t get a lot of screen time, she is an impressive character and Sasha Calle’s performance is so good, that James Gunn and Peter Safran (The current CEOs of DC Studios) should consider her for the role again for the announced Supergirl movie for the DCU.

When the two Barry’s reach the point that they go back in time so that they find a point that they win the fight and nobody dies, is the point where the story is at its peak as the original Barry starts to realize that going back in time and changing things has far worse consequences than he thought. Seeing the alternate Barry change for the worse each time he changes things with the different universes starting to collide with each other, the presentation isn’t the best, but it shows well enough so that it gets the point, and the cameos are nice, some other character and versions of the Flash would be nice.

The end is confusing as it isn’t transitioning to the actual DCU we will get in the future, but it shows that even though the flash tried to get everything back to how they were, some things still are different. Overall, it is a good movie that DC fans will appreciate, and most people will enjoy even with its shortcomings.
